Rock The Boat – The Hues Corporation

Rock The Boat - The Hues Corporation

Formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, California, USA. Their name was taken as a pun on the Howard Hughes billion-dollar corporation. They had been performing for five years when their biggest hit, ‘Rock The Boat’, arrived.

The vocal trio consisted of Hubert Ann Kelly (24 April 1947, Fairchild, Alabama, USA; soprano), St. Clair Lee (b. Bernard St. Clair Lee Calhoun Henderson, 24 April 1944, San Francisco, California, USA; baritone) and Fleming Williams (b. Flint, Michigan, USA; tenor). Their first record, ‘Goodfootin’’, was recorded for Liberty Records in 1970 but failed to hit.

They signed with RCA Records in 1973 and made the charts with a song called ‘Freedom For The Stallion’. ‘Rock The Boat’, originally a forgotten album track, was released in 1974 as the next single and reached number 1 in the US pop charts and number 6 in the UK, becoming one of the first significant disco hits. Tommy Brown (b. Birmingham, Alabama, USA) replaced Williams after the single hit and their only other chart success came later that same year with ‘Rockin’ Soul’, which peaked at number 18 in the US chart and reached the Top 30 in the UK.

The group continued to record into the late 70s, but they were unable to repeat their earlier success. However, in 1983 ‘Rock The Boat’ made another chart appearance when Forrest took the single to the UK Top 5 position.

Lets Rock – the soulchip tom novy Vs eniac mix

You just can’t be mad at him: champagne, nipple slips and frenzy belong to every music event. Still, Tom Novy seems to attract them in a very special way. No wonder, after all he is one of the few exceptionally gifted artists in the music scene. Worldwide chart successes and appearances in the best clubs of the world have been part of his career as well as his activities as VJ or radio host.

Tom Novy was born on the 10th of March 1970. He released his first record “I House You” in 1995 and directly entered the top 10 of the Germand Dance Charts. Only one year later he gained international reputation with his single “Superstar”, which climbed on position 15 in the Media-Control Charts in Germany and onto top positions in 18 other countries. 1998 was the year of “I Rock”, which became not only a chartbreaker but a real House anthem.

“I Rock” stayed over 10 weeks in the Media-Control Charts and even 20 weeks in the Airplay-Top-100. His Single “Pumpin” reached #19 of the UK Charts in June 2000. In the same year, Tom Novy became the first ever German artist to mix the “Ministry of Sound Annual” Compilation. His 2001 released debut album “My Definition” (Top 30 – Media Control) and featured the opener track “Welcome to the Race” (official Mercedes-Benz formula 1 Nurburgring Track) with singer Lima Ben-Jannett. His single “Lovin U” in 2004 became a worldwide success, also in South Africa, where Tom took the top 10 by storm.

Back in Germany, “Take It” featuring Lima became the most aired Dance tune in German radio and made it into the top 20. “Your Body” featuring singer Mike Marshall entered top 10 of the UK sales charts in December 2005 and went top 15 in 20 other countries. Tom’s excellent music taste is also appreciated by many other bands and musicians. By now Tom has remixed and produced for 10CC, Backstreet Boys, DJ Thomilla, Eric Morillo, Jimmy Sommerville, Joachim Deutschland, Sander Kleinenberg, Snap, Stefan Remmler (Trio), Ludacris, Marianne Rosenberg, Mousse T., Moonbootica and Sonique, to name but a few.

Furthermore, Tom Novy hosted several tv-shows, among them “Dance Floor Charts”, “Streetlife”, “Battle of DJ’s” and “Nightlife” on MTV, as well as the “Mac Chart-Show” (2004) on Pro 7. Moreover, Tom continues to mix a weekly radio show on FFN and has already been hosting a show for Radio Energy Munich since 1999. Additionally, he will put his hands on the popular Energy Mastermix – broadcasted on all Energy frequencies.

Dinosaur – killing space rock was a comet

Dinosaur – killing space rock was a comet

By Paul RinconScience editor, BBC News website, The Woodlands, Texas

Dinosaur - killing space rock was a comet

The impact 65 million years ago killed off 70% of species on Earth – including the dinosaurs.

The space rock that hit Earth 65m years ago and is widely implicated in the end of the dinosaurs was probably a speeding comet, US scientists say.

Researchers in New Hampshire suggest the 180km-wide Chicxulub crater in Mexico was carved out by a smaller object than previously thought.

Many scientists consider a large and relatively slow moving asteroid to have been the likely culprit.

Details were outlined at the 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

But other researchers were more cautious about the results.

“The overall aim of our project is to better characterise the impactor that produced the crater in the Yucatan peninsula [in Mexico],” Jason Moore, from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, told BBC News.

The space rock gave rise to a global layer of sediments enriched in the chemical element iridium, in concentrations much higher than naturally occurs; it must have come from outer space.

Extra-terrestrial chemistry

However, in the first part of their work, the team suggests that frequently quoted iridium values are incorrect. Using a comparison with another extraterrestrial element deposited in the impact – osmium – they were able to deduce that the collision deposited less debris than has previously been supposed.

The recalculated iridium value suggests a smaller body hit the Earth. So for the second part of their work, the researchers took the new figure and attempted to reconcile it with the known physical properties of the Chicxulub impact.

For this smaller space rock to have produced a 180km-wide crater, it must have been travelling relatively quickly. The team found that a long-period comet fitted the bill much better than other possible candidates.

“You’d need an asteroid of about 5km diameter to contribute that much iridium and osmium. But an asteroid that size would not make a 200km-diameter crater,” said Dr Moore.

“So we said: how do we get something that has enough energy to generate that size of crater, but has much less rocky material? That brings us to comets.”

Dr Moore’s colleague Prof Mukul Sharma, also from Dartmouth College, told BBC News: “You would need some special pleading for an asteroid moving very rapidly – although it is possible. But of the comets and asteroids we have looked at in the skies, the comets are the ones that are moving very rapidly.”

Long-period comets are balls of dust, rock and ice that are on highly eccentric trajectories around the Sun. They may take hundreds, thousands or in some cases even millions of years to complete one orbit.

The extinction event 65 million years ago is now widely associated with the space impact at Chicxulub. It killed off about 70% of all species on Earth in just a short period of time, most notably the non-avian dinosaurs.

The enormous collision would have triggered fires, earthquakes and huge tsunamis. The dust and gas thrown up into the atmosphere would have depressed global temperatures for several years. Read more…..www.bbc.co.uk

Daddy Cool - Eagle Rock

Daddy Cool is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1970 with the original line-up of Wayne Duncan (bass, Vocals), Ross Hannaford (lead guitar, bass, vocals), Ross Wilson (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica) and Gary Young (drums, vocals) . Their debut single “Eagle Rock” was released in May 1971 and stayed at number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks. Their debut July 1971 LPDaddy Who? Daddy Cool also reached number 1 and became the first Australian album to sell more than 100,000 copies. Their name comes from the 1957 song “Daddy Cool” by US rock group The Rays, Daddy Cool included their version on Daddy Who? Daddy Cool.

Daddy Cool’s music featured 1950s Doo-wop style rock cover versions and originals which were mostly written by Wilson. On stage they provided a danceable sound which was accessible and fun. Their second album was Sex, Dope, Rock’n’Roll: Teenage Heaven from January 1972 and reached the Top Ten. Breaking up in August 1972, Daddy Cool briefly reformed during 1974-1975 before disbanding again, they reformed with the band’s original line-up in 2005. History
1964-1970: Previous bands
Main articles: The Pink Finks and Sons of the Vegetal Mother

Ross Hannaford (guitar, bass, vocals) and Ross Wilson (guitar, vocals, harmonica) formed pop / R&B Melbourne-based group The Pink Finks in 1964 while they were still attending highschool in the south eastern Melbourne suburb of Beaumaris, they later attended the senior campus of Sandringham College. They recorded a version of Richard Berry’s “Louie Louie” in 1965 which led to a recording contract and three more singles. In 1967 they formed The Party Machine, which had a more radical sound (influenced by Frank Zappa and Howlin’ Wolf), the band included Mike Rudd (later in Spectrum) on bass guitar. They released a single “You’ve All Gotta Go” in 1969; their printed songbooks were confiscated and burned by the Victorian Vice Squad for being obscene and seditious. Wilson disbanded The Party Machine after receiving an invitation to travel to London to join expatriate Australian band Procession during 1969, after they released Procession on Festival Records Wilson returned to Australia.

Wayne Duncan (bass, vocals) and Gary Young (drums, vocals) were the rhythm section of many bands particularly instrumentals since the 1950s. One of these was The Rondells which were also the backing band for Bobby & Laurie a popular singing duo with their number 1 hit “Hitch Hiker” from 1966.

Young and Wilson met in 1969 whilst both were working in a book warehouse, each had previous band mates who were interested in forming a new group. Wilson, Hannaford, Young and Duncan formed Sons of the Vegetal Mother later that year, this band had a more experimental Progressive rock sound. Other members included: Rudd (bass), Trevor Griffin (piano), Jeremy Kellock (Jeremy Noone) (tenor sax), Tim Partridge (bass), Ian Wallace (alto sax), Simon Wettenhall (trumpet) and Bruce Woodcock (tenor sax).

As a teenager he sang with the Roosevelt High School Glee Club and eventually formed his own group, the Jivin’ Jets, before joining the U.S. Navy in 1963. Back on civilian street, four years later, George sang in clubs and lounges around Florida and after seven years of modest musical success and a couple of records, enrolled in college to study law enforcement. But music was still on his mind and he decided to record “Rock Your Baby” as one last shot. It hit the charts like a tidal wave.
