Born to Be Alive – Patrick Hernandez

Born to Be Alive – Patrick Hernandez

Born to Be Alive - Patrick Hernandez

Hernandez was born in Le Blanc-Mesnil in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, France, to a Spanish father and a half-Austrian and half-Italian mother. Growing up in the 1960s, he became interested in music. He toured dancehalls and ballrooms of southern France with a number of groups over the next decade. Hernandez met his music partner Herv? Tholance, an arranger, guitarist, and vocalist, during that period. The two formed a duo and started achieving local success backing French musicians such as Francis Cabrel, Laurent Voulzy, and the French group Gold.

In 1978, Hernandez met producer Jean Vanloo, and with disco music at its peak, decided it was time to try his hand at disco. Vanloo agreed and signed Patrick to a contract. He was then sent to Waterloo, Belgium to work on songs.

After working for about a year, the first of the resulting six songs would change Hernandez’s life and make him an international star for a short period. The songs were released on the Aariana sub-label Aquarius Records (in France) in November 1978. The first single that was released was the disco song “Born to Be Alive”. Its success was immediate, and in January 1979, Hernandez received his first gold record from Italy. The song spread throughout Europe, where it hit #1 in France in April and remained there until July. By then, the United States had caught on, and through some remixing, the record was signed to the A-Tom-Mik label headed by the award winning dance promoter Tom Hayden and music publisher Mike Stewart through their label/production deal with Columbia Records. The remixed version of “Born to Be Alive” was released on a commercial 12″ single, and it shot up the disco charts to #1 and crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at #16. By year’s end, Hernandez had racked up 52 gold and platinum record awards from more than 50 different countries.

While Hernandez was touring the United States, he was accompanied by his producer Jean Vanloo and his friend Jean-Claude Pellerin. Vanloo and Pellerin held auditions in New York that spring for dancers to accompany Hernandez on his worldwide tour. The chosen dancers included a young Madonna.

Hernandez’s follow-ups to “Born to Be Alive” did not fare as well in America. “Disco Queen” backed with “Show Me The Way You Kiss” did not get any radio support and sold poorly, but the album Born to Be Alive still sold well and won him a Billboard Award in February 1980.

In 1981, Hernandez released the import.

Cher – Dark Lady

Cher – Dark Lady

Cher - Dark Lady

If she could turn back time, what would the pop queen change? After decades of public heartbreak and career rebirths she’s still as youthful as the day she first serenaded Sonny.

Cher’s career has lasted over forty years, first as a singer, then as a TV comedian and, later, as a mature and talented actress.

The young Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre was dragged out of her job as a studio back-up singer by crooner and music promoter Sonny Bono when she was just seventeen. Failing to impact as double act Caesar and Cleo, the tall, deadpan girl and the diminutive Bono gained huge popularity as Sonny & Cher, though each continued to occasionally record on their own. They ended up marrying in 1964.

Musically, the husband-wife team grew ever more popular with hits such as ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘The Beat Goes On’. Changing musical tastes at the turn of the decade and financing flop films led to the couple becoming seriously in debt. The humiliation of the Lounge circuit finally evolved into Las Vegas appearances. Their onstage banter and lavish Bob Mackie costumes formed the basis of their TV show. The couple started to work on comedy sketches and ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour’ debuted in 1971. It was a hit and ran for three years on US networks.

By 1974, Sonny and Cher split, both professionally and romantically. Cher returned to music and recorded a series of commercially successful pop albums. Sonny eased himself out of showbiz and into politics. Cher on the other hand remarried briefly, in 1975, to Greg Allman.

However, film was Cher’s passion of the 1980s and she worked hard on small parts, eventually winning Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance in ‘Silkwood’. Buoyed by her success, Cher was offered starring roles in ‘Mask’, ‘Suspect’ and ‘The Witches of Eastwick’. In 1988 she won the Academy Award’s Best Actress gong for her role in ‘Moonstruck’. At the same time, her ‘Heart of Stone’ album produced a sizeable hit ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ and a memorably risqué outfit for the video.

She made her directing debut with ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ in 1996. Despite her reputation as supporter for gay rights and AIDS charities, Cher was initially less than delighted when her daughter was outted by the press. Their relationship mended in time for Chastity to break the news to her mother that Sonny had died while skiing. The eulogy to her former partner displayed Cher’s vulnerable side to the public. Chastity was later to rename herself Chaz, following her decision to change sex. A documentary which chart’s her gender reassignment, entitled ‘Becoming Chaz’, shows Cher explaining that “at some point, I’m going to have to start calling her him”. John Butler Trio – Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio – Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio - Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio is a ‘jam band’ led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. From humble beginnings, the JBT has emerged to become one of the most respected and ear-worthy Aussie acts, lauded for their talent to mould environmental and politcal themes seamlessly into radio freindly riffs and hooks. Even though band leader and name-sake John is considered a certified Aussie, he was actually born and raised in California, but was bought to his father’s native homeland of Australia when he was 11.

While studying to become a teacher in Perth, John started busking on the streets, where his home grown compositions received a strong response. He released his first cassette tape by the name of ‘Searching For Heritage’ which eventually sold 3000 copies. By the end of 1996, he had dropped out of Curtin University to pursue a musical career and started playing at open mic nights.

Fast forward to 2000 and, teamed with Jason McGann and Bassist Gavin Shoesmith he released his first album by the John Butler Trio ‘Three’. It wasn’t long before JBT were being hailed as the next bona fide stars in Australia. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, Banjo, the guitarist issued the double-disc live set Living 2001-2002 and the EP Zebra, with ‘Sunrise Over Sea’.

This album sold well in Australia, debuting at number one on the ARIA charts, and led Butler to an opening spot on Dave Matthews’ tour that year. His success is more impressive given that the bands releases are marketed independently by Jarrah Records which John Butler co-owns with West Australian folk band The Waifs.

Butler released ‘Grand National’ worldwide in March of 2007.The band has also won an ARIA award for ‘Best Independent Release’ for Three in 2001 and has been nominated for three others. Bio source…..www.mtv.com.au

Royals – Lorde

Royals – Lorde

Royals - Lorde

This NZ teen is about to make a big splash beyond blog-land.

Lorde is Ella Yelich O’Connor, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter and aspiring pop star from New Zealand. Actually, she already is a star back home where her debut EP, The Love Club, went to No 1, and she’s reached No 1 in the iTunes charts in NZ and Australia with that EP and a further single, Royals, while a post on Buzzfeed in the States led to the EP entering the US iTunes top 10 album chart. There’s more: Royals has had 660,000 SoundCloud streams, its accompanying Larry Clark-inspired video receiving nearly 750,000 YouTube views, and her tracks in total have had two million streams. And there have been favourable Tweets by Grimes and Sky Ferreira, which is neat because she has some of the qualities of both without really resembling either.

Like Ferreira, she is very blog-friendly, with all the right people saying all the right things, but there are signs that she could, unlike her LA counterpart, become big, converting online attention into sales. More Aluna than Aretha, her voice is cute yet cutting, with a sense that she is critiquing the teen world she inhabits. There are lots of designer brands name-checked, and the titles of her songs – Royals, Tennis Court, Million Dollar Bills – suggest a frictional relationship with the high life. “Don’t you think it’s boring how people talk?” goes the opening line to Tennis Court, Lorde’s voice a mix of the sweet, sultry and sour–- think Elvis Costello in class-demolishing mode if he was a teen, female Kiwi slumming it at Coachella. Lyrically she’s inspired by TS Eliot, Allen Ginsberg and Sylvia Plath (her mother is a poet) and musically you get the impression of someone translating experimental electronica for the mainstream – she’s a fan of Burial and James Blake, and one review described her tunes as popped-up takes on Animal Collective. To further her alt credentials, she has even recorded a version of Swingin’ Party by US 80s college rockers the Replacements. She’s Lily Allen’s cheeky kid sister, Lana Del Rey’s bratty niece, Iggy Azalea’s scamp of a second cousin twice removed … Well, we’ve run out of impish relations but you get the point.

Justin Bieber – Baby ft Ludacris

Justin Bieber – Baby ft Ludacris

Justin Bieber - Baby ft Ludacris

Born on March 1, 1994, Justin Bieber started singing since he was 12 and finished the second place when participating in a local singing competition. “The other people in the competition had been taking singing lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasn’t taking it too seriously at the time, I would just sing around the house,” he recalled.

In an effort to share his victory to family and friends who missed his performances at the competition, he and his mother opened a YouTube account and posted his video performances on the file-sharing website. “I put my singing videos from the competition on YouTube so that my friends and family could watch them,” he stated. “But it turned out that other people liked them and they started subscribing to them. That’s how my manager found me. He saw me on YouTube and contacted my family and now I’m signed!”

His manager Scooter Braun flew Justin from his hometown Ontario, Canada to Atlanta, Georgia for a meeting with Usher. “I sang for him and his people and he really wanted to sign me then and there but I still had a meeting with Justin Timberlake who also wanted to sign me.

It turned out Usher’s deal was way better. He had L.A. Reid backing him up and Scooter had a lot of really good connections in Atlanta,” he traced back his memory.
In October of 2008, Justin was officially signed to Island Records and began working on his debut album “My World“. Powerhouse producers like Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream lent their helping hands on the effort. He also got Usher as his collaborator on one of the songs.

“My World” was released across United States on November 17. The album was preceded with four hit singles “One Time”, “One Less Lonely Girl”, “Love Me” and “Favourite Girl”, all of which cracked Top 15 of Canadian Singles chart and reached Top 40 of Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made him the only artist in Billboard history that has four singles from a debut album charting in the Top 40 of the Hot 100 before the album’s release.

Justin toured with Taylor Swift as her supporting act on two of her U.K. stops for “Fearless” tour. He also embarked on five headlining concerts in Canada. Moreover, he appeared in several hit U.S. TV shows, naming some were “Good Morning America”, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Read more…..www.aceshowbiz.com

Royal Crown Revue – Zip Gun Bop

Royal Crown Revue – Zip Gun Bop

Hey Pachuko - The Royal Crown Revue

An engrossing amalgamation of such disparate musical styles as swing, jive, blues and hip-hop, Royal Crown Revue were one of the original instigators of the new swing revival of the mid-90s. Royal Crown Revue had come to prominence at ‘swing-dancing’ engagements in their native Los Angeles, California, USA, including a two-year weekly run at The Derby club, centre point of the whole scene. Their popularity eventually caught the attention of industry executives, with Warner Brothers Records winning the race to sign them.

Royal Crown Revue was formed in 1989 by Eddie Nichols (vocals), Mando Dorame (tenor saxophone), James Achor (guitar), Veikko Lepisto (bass), Daniel Glass (drums), Bill Ungerman (baritone saxophone) and Scott Steen (trumpet). They debuted in 1991 with Kings Of Gangster Bop, which sold strongly on the strength of their passionate, swinging and sharp-suited live performances. Their residency at The Derby, which began in 1993, attracted one particularly important admirer. The director Chuck Russell asked the band to recreate their stage show for his 1994 hit movie The Mask. Their performance of ‘Hey Pachuco!’ endeared them to a whole new audience, and the song was also reprised in front of millions of Americans when figure skater Kurt Browning used it as the musical accompaniment to his programme in 1996. Royal Crown Revue’s performance also served as an inspiration for the movie Swingers, helping popularise the new swing revival.

Their major label debut Mugzy’s Move, a Ted Templeman production, showcased the band’s intricate musicianship and seemingly limitless depth of energy. The set included revisions of Bobby Darin’s ‘Beyond The Sea’ and Willie Dixon’s ‘Honey Child’. Further evidence of the band’s potential for crossover appeal came later that year with the announcement of support dates for bills headed by Jerry Lee Lewis and Porno For Pyros. A compelling independent live recording preceded their second major label release, The Contender, considered by many critics to be the apogee of the new swing movement. Following the album’s release Royal Crown Revue left Warners to sign a new recording contract with punk imprint Side One Dummy. They debuted for the label with 1999’s Walk On Fire. Please Forgive Me – Bryan Adams

Marital Status: Not married

Adams solo career was launched with the release of his self-titled debut album Bryan Adams in February of 1980 on A&M Records. Adams had already been touring, recording demos and working as a studio musician paying his rent for a few years, but it was when Adams formed a song-writing partnership with drummer Jim Vallance that things started to happen. The first album was not initially released in the U.S. (although “Hiding from Love” was issued as a single and reached No. 43 on the dance chart), so Adams assembled a backup band and embarked on his first Canadian tour as a solo act, spending four months playing clubs and colleges.

The tour was to be the foundation for his second album, You Want It, You Got It, which was recorded in NYC in two weeks and released in the spring of 1981. The original album title was Bryan Adams Hasn’t Heard Of You Either but that title was rejected by A&M as being too provocative. This 2nd album became Adams’ first ‘official’ release in the U.S. He toured America for six months, opening for the Kinks and Foreigner and by January of 1982 the album broke into the Billboard charts peaking at No. 118 in 13 weeks. The single “Lonely Nights” became his first Hot 100 entry at No. 84 and peaked at No. 3 on the mainstream rock chart.
His third album, Cuts Like a Knife was released in January of 1983, with the single “Straight from the Heart”, leading the way. It broke his career open, peaking in the Top Ten of the Hot 100 and setting up the LP, which followed. The album also reached Top Ten, selling platinum and spawning further Top 40 hits with the title song and “This Time”.The album’s success was stimulated by Adams’ extensive touring in support of it, which began in Canada and continued into the U.S., where he opened for Journey. From there he toured Europe followed by dates in Japan and then back to Canada.

Adams’ fourth album Reckless was released on his 25th birthday, November 5, 1984, and was preceded by the single “Run to You”, which reached the Top Ten. It was followed by no less than five Top 20 singles drawn from the album: “Somebody”, “Heaven” (which hit number one), “Summer of ‘69″ (Top Ten), “One Night Love Affair”, and a duet with Tina Turner, “It’s Only Love”. Reckless reached No. 1 in the U.S. selling five million copies in America and a reported three million more in the rest of the world. Adams also earned his first two Grammy nominations, Best Male Rock Performance for the album as a whole, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for “It’s Only Love”. As per usual, Adams toured extensively in support of it. His “World Wide in ‘85″ tour began in December of 1984 finally wrapping in November 1985. One of the highlights that year included being the first artist to open the American side of the Live Aid concert from Philadelphia on July 13th.

My Ding A Ling – Chuck Berry

My Ding A Ling – Chuck Berry

My Ding A Ling - Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry’s music has transcended generations. He earns respect to this day because he is truly an entertainer. Berry, also known as “The Father of Rock & Roll”, gained success by watching the audience’s reaction and playing accordingly, putting his listeners’ amusement above all else. For this reason, tunes like “Johnny B. Goode,” “Maybellene” and “Memphis” have become anthems to an integrated American youth and popular culture. Berry is a musical icon who established rock and roll as a musical form and brought the worlds of black and white together in song.

Born in St. Louis on October 18, 1926 Berry had many influences on his life that shaped his musical style. He emulated the smooth vocal clarity of his idol, Nat King Cole, while playing blues songs from bands like Muddy Waters. For his first stage performance, Berry chose to sing a Jay McShann song called “Confessin’ the Blues.” It was at his high school’s student musical performance, when the blues was well-liked but not considered appropriate for such an event. He got a thunderous applause for his daring choice, and from then on, Berry had to be onstage.

Berry took up the guitar after that, inspired by his partner in the school production. He found that if he learned rhythm changes and blues chords, he could play most of the popular songs on the radio at the time. His friend, Ira Harris, showed him techniques on the guitar that would become the foundation of Berry’s original sound. Then in 1952, he began playing guitar and singing in a club band whose song list ranged from blues to ballads to calypso to country. Berry was becoming an accomplished showman, incorporating gestures and facial expressions to go with the lyrics.

It was in 1953 that Chuck Berry joined the Sir John’s Trio (eventually renamed the Chuck Berry Combo), which played the popular Cosmopolitan Club in St. Louis. Country-western music was big at the time, so Berry decided to use some of the riffs and create his own unique hillbilly sound. The black audience thought he was crazy at first, but couldn’t resist trying to dance along with it. Since country was popular with white people, they began to come to the shows, and the audience was at some points almost 40 percent white. Berry’s stage show antics were getting attention, but the other band members did their parts as well. In his own words: “I would slur my strings to make a passage that Johnnie (Johnson) could not produce with piano keys but the answer would be so close that he would get a tremendous ovation. His answer would sound similar to some that Jerry Lee Lewis’s fingers later began to flay.”
