U2 – Sweetest Thing

U2 – Sweetest Thing

U2 - Vertigo

One of only a few bands to achieve consistent commercial and critical success across three decades, U2 has charted success on its own terms on both the artistic and business sides of the music industry. From the band’s earliest days in Dublin, Ireland, to the present, U2 has broken free from the traditional limitations of what a rock band — and rock music — could and couldn’t do. By combining an original sound with honest lyrics and a challenging social message, U2 has earned the respect of their peers and critics, and an almost fanatical following of fans around the world. This is their story.

U2 formed in Dublin in the fall of 1976 after 14-year-old Larry Mullen, Jr. posted a note on the bulletin board at his high school seeking musicians for a new band. From the group of hopefuls that showed up at Mullen’s home that first day, a five-piece known originally as “Feedback” formed with Mullen (born October 31, 1961) on drums, Adam Clayton (born March 13, 1960) on bass, Paul Hewson (later nicknamed “Bono Vox” and eventually just “Bono”, born May 10, 1960) on vocals, and Dave Evans (later nicknamed “The Edge”, born August 8, 1961) on guitar. Dave’s brother, Dick, also played guitar for a while, but left Feedback very early on to join another Dublin band, the Virgin Prunes.

Feedback quickly changed their name to “The Hype,” and began rehearsing on weekends and after school as often as possible, forming genuine friendships and developing an undeniable chemistry in the process. After nearly 18 months of rehearsing, the band’s big break came at a talent show in Limerick, Ireland, in March, 1978. With CBS Records’ Jackie Hayden judging, U2 (they had just changed their name again) won the contest, earning a £500 prize and studio time to record their first demo.

Shake Your Groove Thing – Peaches and Herb

Shake Your Groove Thing – Peaches and Herb

Shake Your Groove Thing - Peaches and Herb

Though “Peaches and Herb” was billed as a duo, their member rotation is more similar to a group’s. Herb has remained the only constant with, at last count, six “Peaches” stepping up to the microphone.
The original “Peaches,” Francine Hurd Barker, (died 8-13-2005), a Washington, D.C., native, earned the childhood nickname “Peaches” because of her genteel manner.
She sang in neighborhood groups and in her teens became the lead singer for a group named The Keynotes. Starting her own group, The Darlettes, they auditioned for and
were signed to D.C. area label Date Records, where their name was changed to The Sweet Things.

Herb Fame, born Herbert Feemster on October 1st, 1942, in Washington, D.C., began singing in church at seven and continued singing through the years in neighborhood groups. After high school graduation, Herb began working at a record store. His friend, Howard University student Freddie Perren, worked at another record store, Sabin’s right around the corner. One day in January 1965, producer Van McCoy came into the store Herb worked in to ask about doing in-store promotion for a group he was working with called The Sweet Things. Herb convinced McCoy to grant him an audition, and a week later the young record store employee was signed to a contract with Date Records.

McCoy took Herb and The Sweet Things to New York for their first recording sessions, but while they were there, decided to use some extra studio time to record a duet with Herb and the lead singer of The Sweet Things, Francine Barker. Impressed with the results McCoy convinced Date Records to release a single of “We’re In This Thing Together.” The original A-side failed to generate much interest. Then a disc jockey at St. Louis, Missouri, radio station KATZ flipped the single over and began playing the B-side, “Let’s Fall In Love.” It was soon moving up the Hot 100, peaking at #-21 in March of 1967. Before the year was over, Peaches and Herb had three more hits: “Close Your Eyes” (#-8 in May), “For Your Love” (#-20 in August) and “Love Is Strange” (#-11 in November). The duo released two hit albums in 1967 “Let’s Fall In Love” and”For Your Love.” By the years end the duo had earned the nickname The Sweethearts Of Soul.

This same year, Francine Barker tired of the rigors of touring and bowed out, she was replaced with Marlene Mack. And the hits continued: “Two Little Kids” (#-31 in January 1968), “When He Touches Me (Nothing Else Matters)” (#-10 R&B in 1969) and “It’s Just A Game, Love” (from the Jim Brown movie “The Split”), (which stalled at #-50 R&B in 1970). It was Peaches and Herb’s last charting single on Date Records. Despondent over
the act’s failing chart success, Herb abruptly quit Peaches and Herb and got a job with the Washington, D.C. Police Department in July 1970.

Then in 1976, Herb decided to re-enter the music business. Linda Greene was home in Washington D.C. that year after working as a model. “I bumped into Van and told him I was at home now and wished I could get into the music business. I thought I was ready to handle something like that” she told the Associated Press. Van mentioned Linda’s name to Herb’s manager and the two met and hit it off. Van, who was currently under contract to MCA Records, brought the “new” Peaches & Herb over to the label and produced their 1977 self-titled release. The duo charted in June with “We’re Still Together” but the albums sales were dismal and it sank without a trace.

Hot Chocolate formed in Brixton, London, England in 1968. Members of the group included Errol Brown, Tony Connor, Larry Ferguson, Harvey Hinsley, Patrick Olive and Tony Wilson.
In 1969 the band started working on a reggae version of the John Lennon song “Give Peace A Chance”. Errol Brown had changed the lyrics for their version but was informed that he could not do this without John Lennon’s permission, so a copy of the demo was sent to the Beatles Apple record label to see what they thought of it. Fortunately, John loved the version and it was released on the Apple label.
The group was given the named ‘The Hot Chocolate Band’ by a secretary at the company, Mavis Smith, the band later changed it to just ‘Hot Chocolate’.
Towards the end of 1969 Mickie Most signed Errol and the cofounder of the group Tony Wilson as writers and recorded their songs with Mary Hopkins, Julie Felix and Herman’s Hermits before encouraging them to come up with a song for themselves. In 1970 Hot Chocolate, with Errol Brown as lead singer, released their first record entitled “Love Is Life” which reached number 6 in the charts. This was the start of a fifteen year career for the group who amassed a total of over 30 hits and also became the only group in the UK to have a hit for fifteen consecutive years.
In 1981 Hot Chocolate had the honour of being invited by Prince Charles and Lady Diana at their pre-wedding reception at Buckingham Palace which was attended by heads of Government and many members of European Royalty.
In 1986 Errol left the band and took time out to spend more time with his wife and then young children. The rest of the members of Hot Chocolate also took some time off to consider their future and in 1992 Patrick Olive, Harvey Hinsley and Tony Connor joined up with agent Richard Martin and decided to start touring again.
The band found a new singer Greg Bannis and keyboard players Andy Smith & Steve Ansell. Since 1992, the band has enjoyed years of continued success touring all around the world performing to many thousands of fans who love the music of Hot Chocolate. In 1997 the classic single “You Sexy Thing” reached number one in the charts after it was featured in the movie ‘The Full Monty’ and a new Hot Chocolate ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation released in October 1997 reached number 10 in the album charts.
In 2010 singer Kennie Simon replaced Greg Bannis on vocals creating what many are saying is the best sound ever.

You To Me Are Everything – The Real Thing

You To Me Are Everything – The Real Thing

You To Me Are Everything - The Real Thing

The Real Thing, a Liverpool based vocal group, had its origins in the Merseybeat boom of the 1960s. Lead Singer Eddie Amoo was a former band member of The Chants, whose beat singles gathered considerable critical acclaim, although they failed to chart. After continuing to record for various record labels, the band name was eventually dropped.

Re-labelled as The Real Thing, and with brother Chris Amoo, Ray Lake and Dave Smith on board, they got their big break following an appearance on the “Opportunity Knocks” ITV talent show. Spotted by an ex-Radio Luxembourg DJ, Tony Hall, he played a significant part in their early career development. Even so, success was not immediate, and contracts they signed with a couple of major record labels came to nothing, before signing to Pye Records in 1975. A spell acting as backing singers on tour with David Essex, also helped to increase their profile.

With a song written and produced by Ken Gold and Mick Denne, The Real Thing finally emerged in 1976 when “You To Me Are Everything” sailed up to the Number One slot in the UK singles chart.

It led off a list of nine hits on Pye over a three year period, which included “Can’t Get By Without You”, and “Can You Feel The Force”, both of which were top five success stories.

Their brand of commercial sweet soul music, mixed with disco influences, established their popularity with the British audience. They were the UK’s best selling black group of the late 1970s, but a switch to the Calibre record label in 1980 slowed the momentum. Subsequent material fared less well, although remixes of their first two hits charted some 10 years after their original release.

The group, with three of the founder members still on board, continue to perform and record to this day

Chris Amoo is also a regular on the Dog Show circuit, the highlight coming in 1987, when his Afghan Hound, Champion Viscount Grant, was crowned Supreme Champion at Crufts.
Eddie Amoo’s early career, in the chants, was supported by a backing band called ‘Vince & the Volcanoes’, led by Vinnie Tow/Ismail, who was managed and promoted by Mr George Roberts at Liverpool 8, Stanley House, before the chants were, temporarily, backed by the Beatles at the Original Cavern Club.
