Little Red Riding Hood – Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Little Red Riding Hood – Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Little Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs were a 60s Tex-Mex rock ‘n’ roll band. The group was formed by lead singer Domingo “Sam” Samudio in 1961 in Dallas, Texas, USA. The other original members were Carl Medke, Russell Fowler, Omar “Big Man” Lopez, and Vincent Lopez. The original line-up only recorded one record which failed to sell. They broke up in late 1962. Samudio went on to become an organist for the rock group Andy and the Knight riders.

Samudio resurrected The Pharaohs in 1963. The new line-up was Samudio (vocals/organ), Dave Martin (bass), Ray Stinnet (guitar), Jerry Patterson (drums), and Butch Gibson (saxophone). They made their debut with the novelty number “Haunted House” and signed up with the MGM music label. The follow-up songs “Ju Ju Hand” and “Ring Dang Do” were minor chart successes. The band scored their greatest smash hit with the wonderfully raucous “Wooly Bully,” which sold over three million copies and stayed on the Billboard Top 40 charts for 18 weeks (the song peaked at #2 on the pop charts). “Wooly Bully” was named Record of the Year for 1965 by “Billboard” magazine. The bubbly “Li’l Red Riding Hood” likewise did very well; it peaked at #2 on the Billboard pop charts for two weeks straight. The group went on to record more enjoyably frothy novelty singles, but none of them were as successful as either “Wooly Bully” or “Li’l Red Riding Hood.” The band appear as themselves in the musical When the Boys Meet the Girls (1965). Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs disbanded in 1967.

A true rock ‘n’ roll classic, “Wooly Bully” was featured on the soundtracks to the films Wild Country (2005), Mistah (1994), Full Metal Jacket(1987), Baby It’s You (1983), and More American Graffiti (1979). Domingo Samudio went on to contribute two self-penned songs for the soundtrack to The Border (1982), starring Jack Nicholson. Samudio is now a motivational speaker who still makes occasional live concert appearances as well as continues to write both songs and poetry.

John Butler Trio – Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio – Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio - Peaches and Cream

John Butler Trio is a ‘jam band’ led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. From humble beginnings, the JBT has emerged to become one of the most respected and ear-worthy Aussie acts, lauded for their talent to mould environmental and politcal themes seamlessly into radio freindly riffs and hooks. Even though band leader and name-sake John is considered a certified Aussie, he was actually born and raised in California, but was bought to his father’s native homeland of Australia when he was 11.

While studying to become a teacher in Perth, John started busking on the streets, where his home grown compositions received a strong response. He released his first cassette tape by the name of ‘Searching For Heritage’ which eventually sold 3000 copies. By the end of 1996, he had dropped out of Curtin University to pursue a musical career and started playing at open mic nights.

Fast forward to 2000 and, teamed with Jason McGann and Bassist Gavin Shoesmith he released his first album by the John Butler Trio ‘Three’. It wasn’t long before JBT were being hailed as the next bona fide stars in Australia. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, Banjo, the guitarist issued the double-disc live set Living 2001-2002 and the EP Zebra, with ‘Sunrise Over Sea’.

This album sold well in Australia, debuting at number one on the ARIA charts, and led Butler to an opening spot on Dave Matthews’ tour that year. His success is more impressive given that the bands releases are marketed independently by Jarrah Records which John Butler co-owns with West Australian folk band The Waifs.

Butler released ‘Grand National’ worldwide in March of 2007.The band has also won an ARIA award for ‘Best Independent Release’ for Three in 2001 and has been nominated for three others. Bio source…..www.mtv.com.au

Cher – Gypsies Tramps And Thieves

Cher – Gypsies Tramps And Thieves

Cher - Gypsies Tramps And Thieves

If she could turn back time, what would the pop queen change? After decades of public heartbreak and career rebirths she’s still as youthful as the day she first serenaded Sonny.

Cher’s career has lasted over forty years, first as a singer, then as a TV comedian and, later, as a mature and talented actress.

The young Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre was dragged out of her job as a studio back-up singer by crooner and music promoter Sonny Bono when she was just seventeen. Failing to impact as double act Caesar and Cleo, the tall, deadpan girl and the diminutive Bono gained huge popularity as Sonny & Cher, though each continued to occasionally record on their own. They ended up marrying in 1964.

Musically, the husband-wife team grew ever more popular with hits such as ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘The Beat Goes On’. Changing musical tastes at the turn of the decade and financing flop films led to the couple becoming seriously in debt. The humiliation of the Lounge circuit finally evolved into Las Vegas appearances. Their onstage banter and lavish Bob Mackie costumes formed the basis of their TV show. The couple started to work on comedy sketches and ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour’ debuted in 1971. It was a hit and ran for three years on US networks.

By 1974, Sonny and Cher split, both professionally and romantically. Cher returned to music and recorded a series of commercially successful pop albums. Sonny eased himself out of showbiz and into politics. Cher on the other hand remarried briefly, in 1975, to Greg Allman.

However, film was Cher’s passion of the 1980s and she worked hard on small parts, eventually winning Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance in ‘Silkwood’. Buoyed by her success, Cher was offered starring roles in ‘Mask’, ‘Suspect’ and ‘The Witches of Eastwick’. In 1988 she won the Academy Award’s Best Actress gong for her role in ‘Moonstruck’. At the same time, her ‘Heart of Stone’ album produced a sizeable hit ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ and a memorably risqué outfit for the video.

She made her directing debut with ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ in 1996. Despite her reputation as supporter for gay rights and AIDS charities, Cher was initially less than delighted when her daughter was outted by the press. Their relationship mended in time for Chastity to break the news to her mother that Sonny had died while skiing. The eulogy to her former partner displayed Cher’s vulnerable side to the public. Chastity was later to rename herself Chaz, following her decision to change sex. A documentary which chart’s her gender reassignment, entitled ‘Becoming Chaz’, shows Cher explaining that “at some point, I’m going to have to start calling her him”. Read more…..thebiographychannel.co.uk

Raining Cats and Dogs – Common Sayings

Raining Cats and Dogs – Common Sayings

Raining Cats and Dogs - Common Sayings

Meaning:
A torrential rain. As in, “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

Most say it came from …

In the 1500s human beings had the pleasure of living in homes with thatched roofs. In these strange times, humans for some reason didn’t want their pets shitting in their homes and so they were always kept outside. The animals would keep themselves warm in the little nooks in the thatching on the roofs and store their food and porno up there for a rainy day.

When an especially rainy day did come along, the animals would either get washed off of the roof or would come leaping down looking for better cover. The story goes that the townsfolk would look out their window, see pets falling from the sky, and proclaim it to be “raining cats and dogs.” Then they would probably burn a witch or something.

Raining Cats and Dogs - Common Sayings

So is that true?
Apparently the saying didn’t come about until the 17th century, not the 16th. So, we’ll just move on and call this a complete lie.

Unfortunately there are so many suggested origins of this one that it’s hard to tell if any of them are more than legends mutated by time and people who like to lie. One story says 17th century sewage systems (if the town even had one) were prone to massive flooding, washing out dead dogs and cats that had fallen in. This would leave some to believe that dead animals were literally falling from the sky. Why the sight of a dead animal on the ground would cause anyone to assume it fell from the heavens, as opposed to just falling over dead the normal way, is anyone’s guess.

Others claim it goes all the way back to Norse mythology (the storm god Odin had two hounds). Still others say it has to do with the freak occurrence of frogs or fish falling from the sky (after being swept up by storms and flung miles away) and that the saying “it’s raining cats and dogs” is just a way to say it’s raining even harder than the time it rained fish. Still it seems like a catchier idiom would have been, “It’s raining bears!” or “It’s raining human babies! Quick, catch the babies!” followed by frenetic screaming.

Anyway, there’s no hard and fast proof for any of them so take your pick.

A  lot of the English language seems to have been developed as some kind of elaborate practical joke. It’s full of little sayings and idioms that on their face make no sense at all, and if traced back to their origins are downright horrifying.

Dating and Romance Scams

Dating and Romance Scams

What are dating and romance scams?
Dating and romance scams try to lower your defences by appealing to your romantic or compassionate side. They play on emotional triggers to get you to provide money, gifts or personal details.

Scammers target victims by creating fake profiles on legitimate internet dating services. Once you are in contact with a scammer, they will express strong emotions for you in a relatively short period of time and will suggest you move the relationship away from the website, to phone, email and/or instant messaging. Scammers often claim to be from Australia, but travelling or working overseas.

They will go to great lengths to gain your interest and trust, such as sharing personal information and even sending you gifts. Scammers may take months, to build what seems like the romance of a lifetime and may even pretend to book flights to visit you, but never actually come. Once they have gained your trust they will ask you (either subtly or directly) for money, gifts or your banking/credit card details.  They will pretend to need these for a variety of reasons.

For example, they may claim to be in the depths of despair due to financial hardship or an ill family member.

In other cases, the scammer might start off by sending you flowers or other small gifts then will tell you about a large amount of money they need to transfer out of their country or that they want to share with you. They will then ask for your banking details or money to cover administrative fees or taxes to free up the money. WARNING – This may be money laundering which is a criminal offence: never agree to transfer money for someone else.

Alternatively scammers may claim to have fallen ill or been involved in a serious accident. They will then ask you for money to pay medical bills or travel expenses to visit you. In some instances you may even be contacted by someone claiming to be their doctor.

Regardless of how you are scammed, you could end up losing a lot of money. Online dating and romance scams cheat Australians out of millions every year. The money you send to scammers is almost always impossible to recover and in addition, you may feel long-lasting emotional betrayal at the hands of someone who you thought loved you and was trustworthy.

Warning signs

  • You meet someone on an internet dating website and their profile picture or photograph looks different to their description or like it’s from a magazine.
  • After just a few contacts they profess strong feelings for you and suggest moving the conversation away from the website preferring email, instant messaging and/or phone instead.
  • After gaining your trust, they tell you an elaborate story and ask for money, gifts or your bank account/credit card details.
  • They continue to ask you for money, but never actually visit you.
  • If you don’t send money straightaway, their emails and calls will often become more desperate, persistent or direct.
  • The email is poorly written, vague or contains specific information taken directly from news articles, repeats itself, you are addressed by the wrong name, or the email is not personally addressed at all.

Protect yourself from dating and romance scams

  • ALWAYS consider the possibility that the approach may be a scam, particularly if the warning signs listed above appear. Try to remove the emotion from your decision making no matter how caring or persistent they seem.
  • Talk to an independent friend, relative or fair trading agency before you send any money. THINK TWICE before sending money to someone you have only recently met online or haven’t met in person.
  • NEVER give credit card or online account details to anyone by email.
  • Be very careful about how much personal information you share on social network sites. Scammers can use your information and pictures to create a fake identity or to target you with a scam.
  • If you agree to meet in person, tell family and friends where you are going. If this includes overseas travel, consider carefully the advice on www.smarttraveller.gov.au before making any plans.
  • Where possible, avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment via money order, wire transfer or international funds transfer. It is rare to recover money sent this way.
  • If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.
  • Money laundering is a criminal offence: do not agree to transfer money for someone else.

As well as following these specific tips, find out how to protect yourself from all sorts of other scams.

Report scams

If you think you’ve spotted a scam, report a scam to SCAMwatch or contact the ACCC on 1300 795 995. You should also spread the word to your friends and family to protect them.

Lets Just Kiss And Say Goodbye – The Manhattans

Lets just kiss and say goodbye – The Manhattans

Lets Just Kiss And Say Goodbye - The Manhattans

The Manhattans were formed in the early 60s in New Jersey as a quintet led by writer/bass vocalist Winfred “Blue” Lovett and emotive lead singer George Smith, along with Edward “Sonny” Bivins, Richard “Ricky” Taylor and Kenneth “Wally” Kelly, all of whom had just returned from service in the armed forces.

The group was popular regionally and had minor national success on the strength of some solid recordings for Carnival Records (their version of the country tune “From Atlanta to Goodbye” was a gem) in the late 60s before gaining the attention of Columbia Records in 1970.  Unfortunately, their Columbia signing coincided with the sudden illness and untimely death of lead singer Smith.  During a tour through North Carolina, the Manhattans came upon a college student with an amazing Sam Cooke-like voice.  Recognizing the incredible talent of this 21 year old, the group invited Gerald Alston to join, and he became the lead singer who would bring stardom to the quintet.

After “Kiss and Say Goodbye,” the Manhattans spent the remainder of the decade scoring almost exclusively on the R&B charts.  Then in 1980, they again surprised the Pop world, crossing over for a Pop top 10 hit with their loping 1980 ballad, “Shining Star.”  The group continued to record through the 80s, hitting on the Soul charts with such hits as “Crazy” and “Honey Honey.”  Their last album for Columbia records was the wonderful but overlooked 1986 disc, Back To Basics, produced in part by Bobby Womack and featuring a young Regina Belle singing background vocals.  Unfortunately, the Manhattans’ smooth, adult soul style seemed out of place in the frenetic, electric funk sounds dominating late 80s music, and they were dropped by Columbia records in 1987.

Woman, Woman – Gary Puckett And The Union Gap

Woman, Woman – Gary Puckett And The Union Gap

Young Girl - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (initially credited as The Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett) was an American pop rock group operating in the late 1960s.

Their biggest hits were “Woman, Woman,” “Young Girl,” and “Lady Willpower.” Singer Gary Puckett (born October 17, 1942, Hibbing, Minnesota) grew up in Yakima, Washington – close to the city of Union Gap – and Twin Falls, Idaho.

He began playing guitar in his teens, and graduated from Twin Falls High School before attending college in San Diego, California. There, he quit college and played in several local bands before joining the Outcasts, a local hard rock group comprising bassist Kerry Chater (born August 7, 1945, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada),[1] keyboardist Gary ‘Mutha’ Withem (born August 22, 1946, San Diego), tenor saxophonist Dwight Bement (born December 28, 1945, San Diego), and drummer Paul Wheatbread (born February 8, 1946, San Diego).
In 1966, the band toured the Pacific Northwest without Wheatbread, who was recruited as the house drummer on the television series, Where the Action Is; he later rejoined the line-up. Under manager Dick Badger, the band were renamed The Union Gap in early 1967, and fitted themselves out with Union Army-style Civil War uniforms as a visual gimmick. They then recorded a demo, which was heard by CBS record producer and songwriter Jerry Fuller. Impressed by Puckett’s baritone voice and the band’s soft rock leanings, Fuller signed them to a recording contract with Columbia Records.
